The Day Before

Writer's picture: Michelle WalshMichelle Walsh

I call the 13 year old black lab up next to me on the down comforter.

It is Sunday morning. I sip my coffee without rush, pooch spooning my middle aged heiny. The red head stumbles in and plops down, completing this Holy Trinity. This day before he takes office.

“I am worried,” I confess to my child, tears begin to silently fall down my face before collecting on my chin. I don’t wipe. I continue to sip my coffee, now becoming cold. A conversation ensues about what we can control (ourselves) - and what we cannot control (everything else).

I explain through slimy trails of grief, that it was just but one generation ago, our family was marginalized: judged by ethnicity. If you could pass as white, you did. This much is obvious if we travel back in time to how our country was founded. I come from both sides. I feel the ones who are sick with fear that they may be separated from their children. I wonder what will happen to these families.

How have we forgotten that we belong to each other? The dog snores loudly, reminding me where I am. What can we control? Ourselves. What can’t we control? Everything else.

Charlie and I make a pact to do stupid fun shit today. Finally, I rise from the comfort of the King sized memory foam. I don’t have the gumption to give my elderly dog the boot. If I’m being completely honest, each time Bo leaps up without assistance is a celebration of life. Will he live another 4 years? Because I don’t think I could handle one more loss while Crazy Pants is in office.

I have come to an executive decision: I will re-make the bed around my dog without disruption.

Tuck.

Fluff.

Cover.

This is who I am now. The lady who makes the bed while letting her old dog sleep in it.

I can control this pocket of my Universe.

If you're feeling dread, worry, anticipation, indifference, I see you.

WE BELONG to ONE ANOTHER. Let this be our prayer.
